The Classbooks of Hypothesis-Experiment Class (HEC) capture students and help them engage in learning science concepts. Dr. Itakura in 1963 based on his studies of science history and epistemology made these attractive Classbooks in various fields, and these Classbooks have been developed and utilized in all grades from primary education to university liberal arts education.  Almost all students who have experienced the Classbooks evaluate the class as tanoshii (pleasing, happy), regardless of when, where, and by whom it is carried out. This session presents an introduction of HEC through one of the most used Classbooks 'The Three Phases of Matter'.
The goal of this The Three Phases of Matter is to ensure that the reader understands that things are made of particles (atoms and molecules), and because of differences in the state of aggregations of these particles, we have three phases: solids (crystals), liquids, and gases. It is a Classbook well received by many classes from elementary school to middle school. (Quoted from the introduction of HEC Classbook 'The Three Phases of Matter')

I am interested in teaching introductory physics through HEC(Hypothesis- Experiment- class) method. It is my life work as a teacher of science. Because pupil comes to join the discussion to the result of the experiment and enjoy thinking together. Through that experiments, most pupils... Read More →

I am PhD student at Kyoto University. My research interest is about quantum mechanics. Now I’m trying to make a new lesson plan of quantum mechanics following the Hypothesis-Experiment Class(HEC) methodology. It is based on the idea of R. Feynman’s path integral. My favorite classbook... Read More →
