Students taking Maths and Physics at A-Level study 'mechanics' as a sub-discipline in Year 12-13. Applied Mechanics provides the essential background for many types of engineering, in particular, applied mechanics is the backbone of all mechanical-related engineering specialisms.

A primary expectation of many students in engineering at the first year level in HE is to identify the links between their prior learning and higher level studies at the university in their chosen career path in engineering. This is even more so in the context of the widening participation agenda in HE where the post-92 sector universities such has Sheffield Hallam has an important role to play. When the students begin to see, understand and are able to appreciate these links, they feel more comfortable in their HE journey and their level of confidence and motivation to study naturally increases. Equally, for secondary school teachers in STEM subjects, understanding and visualizing these links and connections, places them in a stong position to guide their students on the correct career path by serving as well-informed mentors.

Using the speaker's experience and expertise in teaching applied mechanics across different engineering streams at first year undergraduate level, this talk will give an insight into some of the ways in which applied mechanics blends in to selected areas of engineering studies. The objective is to enlighten Secondary School teachers in their efforts to encourage Sixth Form students who've chosen mathematics and physics to consider studying mechanical-related engineering disciplines (at Sheffield Hallam!).
